Chelsea was originally named Turnerburgh by settlers from Tunbridge, who hiked there with provisions on their backs. Chelsea is the Shire Town (county seat) of Orange County, Vermont. The town of Chelsea includes the neighborhood names: Boquet Corner and Turkey Hollow. There are no other villages in Chelsea, although Chelsea West Hill is the site of an old cemetery. Chelsea, Vermont is unique in that it has two town commons or greens. North Common dates back to 1795. The “new common” is South Common, where the Court House now stands.
