America’s First Ski School Creates Olympic Winners In Vermont
Life beyond racing is part of the pitch but the calling card for this unique private high school and college prep school is speed. Downhill skiing is the sport of choice for the Burke Mountain Academy students.
Located on the slopes of Burke Mountain, Burke, VT Burke Mountain Academy buildings are designated as Frazier House, Moulton House, Woods House and The Gym. Burke Mountain Academy – the first skiing sports academy in the country continues to produce Olympic skiers and and and Gold Medal Winners.
Warren Witherell, the only person to named to both the Ski Hall of Fame and the Water Skiing Hall of Fame founded Burke Mountain Academy in 1970 when aspiring US skier Martha Coughlin approached Witherell about providing ski racing training year round. The rest is history.
Today, Burke Mountain enrolls about 70 students annually. The schools philosophy emphasizes developing the student, the athlete and the person of character. The setting and history of this private school is more than unique. Burke Mountain Academy, partnering with the US Ski Team has produced ski racing success. Alumni include: 2014 & 2018 Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin, 118 U.S. Ski Team members, 144 national team athletes, 36 Olympians, 5 alumni competitors at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, 6 alumni competitors at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games.
