Barnard, Vermont was originally spelled “Bernard”. The town was named after Sir Frances Bernard, a former Governor of the New Jersey Colony and the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Bernard was the second listed grantee of the town. The spelling change to Barnard was made sometime before 1810 for reasons unclear.
