Brownington VTNortheast Kingdom Vermont community BrowningtonBrownington, Vermont is a town in Orleans County. Brownington was named after the Brown family. Daniel and Timothy Brown were chief grantees.

Reverand Alexander Twilight built Athenian Hall here. The hall is now called the Old Stone House, which was used as a dormitory in the 1830’s.

This building is on the National List of Historic Places and is presently an operating Vermont museum. Reverend Twilight is said to have gathered stones he quarried himself to construct the schoolhouse. Alexander Twilight was the first African American to serve in a state legislature and the first to receive a degree from an American University.
