Brownsville is named for two early settlers, John and Briant Brown. Many of the early settlers were sheep farmers. Ascutney Mountain Resort, a Vermont ski area and Holiday Inn Vacation Resort is located in Brownsville.



There are some historical covered bridges nearby, including the Brownsville Bridge – which is an historical landmark. South of Brownsville is the Little Ascutney Wildlife Management Area, a state run conservation area that offer hiking trails.
