Charleston, Vermont is a town in in Orleans County. Charleston is comprised of three unincorporated village: Charleston, East Charleston and West Charleston. Charleston was inhabited by the Abenakis who told of large “runaway pond” that happened here. Charleston was originally named “Navy” by the Rhode Island founder, Com. Abraham Whipple. Echo Lake and Great Falls of Clyde River are located here. Pensioners Pond in Charleston was named because of the pension of a revolutionary soldier who employed its water power. Other bodies of water in Charleston include: Toad Pond and Broadway Pond.
