Chittendon, Vermont is a town in Rutland County. A mostly rural and hilly area, Chittenden is just north of US Route 4 and is one of south central Vermont’s largest towns in terms of area. Chittenden is named after Thomas Chittenden, a former Vermont Governor and member of the Green Mountain Boys. Chittenden and his son Noah were among the town’s principal land grantees. Chitteneden encompasses more than 46,300 acres. The Chittenden Reservoir offers public access boat launch, fishing, and wildlife viewing. There are miles of hiking trails and horse riding paths in Chittenden. The Mountain Top Inn & Resort and The Fox Creek Inn (formerly the Tulip Tree Inn) are located here. Chittenden was the home of Gershom Beach, who walked more than 60 miles in 24 hours to round up the Green Mountain Boys back in 1775.
