Connecticut River Auto Tour
From St. Johnsbury, Vermont follow Rte. 2 East to the junction of Rte. 102 North to Guildhall and Bloomfield, along the west bank of the Connecticut River. In Bloomfield you leave the River to turn West on Rte. 105 into Island Pond. If you prefer to stay along the River, you can continue along on Rte. 102 to Norton, but you will have to turn back or cross the border into Quebec. In Island Pond, you have the choice of heading back to St. Johnsbury on Rte. 114 through some wild and beautiful country with few inhabitants to the Village of East Burke, one of the prettiest villages found in the Northeast Kingdom.
Northeast Kingdom Loop Auto Tour
If you chose not to head back but to continue your 200 mile loop, follow Rte. 111 from Island Pond, Vermont northwest through Morgan to Newport. You will pass by Lake Seymour at Morgan Center that offers stunning views. From Newport follow Rte. 105 to North Troy through rolling farmland. From North Troy, follow Rte. 101 South to Troy, passing by two turn-offs. The first takes you over Richford Mountain and somewhat off our suggested route. The second turns onto Rte. 242 through the village of Jay, over Jay Peak to Montgomery Center, and the start of one of the most scenic routes in Vermont.
From Montgomery Center follow Rte. 58 to Lowell, which starts off paved but turns to rough dirt as you climb through Hazen’s Notch, where you are literally engulfed in fall foliage. Stay on Rte. 58 crossing over Rte. 100 into Irasburg and the junction of Rte. 14. Follow Rte. 14 into Hardwick, stopping along the way at Craftsbury if you have the time. In Hardwick, take Rte. 15 southeast to West Danville, where you pick up Rte. 2 East and head back into St. Johnsbury.
