Barton, Vermont is a town in Orleans County. Barton, VT was first granted to Col. William Barton of Providence, Rhode Island. Located about 20 miles north of St. Johnsbury on US Route 5, Barton is home to manufacturers such as Ethan Allen Furniture – a major employer in the area. Barton includes the villages of Barton and Orleans. Crystal Lake State Park is located in Barton and is a popular location for residents and guests to swim, boat, fish, picnic, or relax. The village of Orleans – which was known as Barton Landing prior to December 11, 1908 – is located just north of Barton. The famous ” trout run” occurs every spring and attracts fisherman from far and wide to witness this annual rite of spring as the rainbow trout battle the swift currents of the Willoughby River as they swim to Willoughby Lake. The highest peak in Barton is Barton Mountain at 2,235 feet. There are several fishing waters in Barton including: Barton River, Willoughby River, Hogtrough Brook, Lord Brook, Annis Brook, May Pond Brook, and Roaring Brook.
