Montpelier, Vermont is a commercial, government, and insurance center surrounded by farmland and granite-quarrying areas. Major manufacturers include granite, wood and plastic products, and processed food.

Points of interest are the Greek Revival-style State Capitol Building pictured below. The building was completed in 1859 with local granite.



Also located in Montpelier Vermont are Hubbard Park, Vermont College, Woodbury College, and the Edward F. Knapp State Airport. The operating Amtrak railroad station that serves the Barre-Montpelier area is actually located in Berlin, Vermont. Not the most luxurious of train stations, but quite practical and convenient for train travelers. Montpelier is named for Montpelier, France, and was settled in the 1780’s.

Montpelier has a humid continental climate, with four distinct seasons. The winters are cold and snowy, with average temperatures ranging from 15°F to 35°F. The summers are warm and humid, with average temperatures ranging from 65°F to 85°F. The city receives an average of 48 inches of snow per year, and the wettest months are July and August.
